Bristol Palin is allegedly going to be on next season's Dancing with the Stars? WTF? When did SHE become a "star"? Which, to be honest, I hate that term. None of these overindulged, undertalented "celebrities" are stars...especially by some of their behavior.

DWTS is scraping the bottom of the barrel if they are classifying HER as a "star."

LadyHawk, we share an antipathy. I'm turned off at the word celebrity. Celebrated for what? All that I've seen are self-centered egoists* famous only for being famous. It irks me that the media makes them famous, when there are so many people who make real contributions to society going unnoticed.

*Ambrose Bierce defined egoist: n. a person of low taste, more interested in himself than in me.

Em and Lady--I agree with you 100 per cent. DWTS has been scraping the bottom of the barrel almost since it started, but this is an all time low!

When I was a little kid, my mother took me to every Fred Astaire movie. He always got to dance with great looking women, my favorite being Cyd Cherise. There was something wicked about her that I was too young to understand, but I was fascinated. I wanted to be Fred Astaire. Ironically, I didn't take dancing lessons until I lost one of my feet, but that worked out for me. Frankly, I haven't seen any of the stars who impressed me with their dancing, although there were several early ones that I liked personally.

I'm so happy to see MONEC signed up here. I can't wait till she starts posting. Monec is one of my oldie-goldie favorites from my Faux days. She didn't know where the New Switzerland was located. That's a problem. We don't have the old site at all anymore, so other than constantly posting at Faux, isports and FaceBook, a good number of people have no idea where to find us.

Checked the Board Index and it seems I'm alone here this afternoon. I'll take a break for awhile and check back every now and again. I know Sunday is a slow day (slower than usual ), but I just happen to be home with nothing to do, and I just don't feel like writing. That's not good, some of my favorite authors (specifically Robert Parker) NEVER let a day go by without writing. Maybe later my brain will connect circuits and I'll feel like writing for a bit... and maybe not...

Some afternoons when the weather is warm and I'm had a large lunch, my brain goes numb. Then I go sit in the porch swing for a little while and just be. Somebody that I admire wrote a piece about being and doing. Life shouldn't be all doing, or we miss too much. Sometimes we just need to be.

Thanks, Buck. I think that when we play the Cowboys during the regular season they will be better prepared. I don't know what was wrong with them. They looked like they hadn't been practicing and seemed confused on defense. I suspect that the mood won't be happy when the players report.

This lounge doesn't have many customers. Perhaps we need to open a tea room. Or we could call it a private club with a restricted membership and people would be clamoring to get it.

You are SO right about that, Em! We should start a "Private Club" room. Isn't it funny the way that works?

I believe that it was Groucho Marx who said that he didn't want to be a member of a club that would accept somebody like him. Obviously everybody doesn't feel that way. My mother was a clubwoman. I don't know how many she was a member of, but she seemed busy with club business all the time. I was practically raised by Auntie Anna, the housekeeper.

There was no Auntie Anna in my life, but my mother had a huge agenda when I was young, and not a lot of it included me. When I grew up and was away at college, she and I became great friends--she was my best, and she was an amazing granny to my kids. She adored my husband as well. Wish I could say the same for my feelings toward her husband (after my dad and she went splitsville).

I can't know, of course, but I think that having a mother out of the home is harder on girls than on boys. Between having a whole neighborhood as my playground and a library where I was allowed to wander at will, I had little trouble in entertaining myself. For some reason most of the boys in the neighborhood (and some of the girls) hung out at our place. We had that big porch to play on and there was a hayloft in the carriage house, from the days when people actually used carriages. The widows walk was everybody's favorite spot. My Dad had a Criss Craft cabin cruiser and he would take us riding on the river on the weekends.

My house was the one that was always full of people, but I'd have to say it wasn't because we had all those amenities. It was just that my parents were funny and we had a pool...

A swimming pool! Wow, you were way ahead of us. We had to go to the Beaumont Country Club to swim. There was a YMCA, but my parents wouldn't let me go there.

It was wonderful--our one luxury.

I still don't have one. There's just no part of my yard that I'm willing to give up for one. It would be nice, though.

Our mango tree takes precedent over everything. We have a pond instead of a pool here at Laurence Manor. We can watch the fishies, and I really enjoy doing that. It's a very calming experience--and I am NOT kidding.

I have a LOT of azaleas and a rose garden and some nice trees, but no fruit trees.

We have the mango tree (of course), banana trees, a tangerine tree, and a Pomelo tree (largest of the citrus fruits). I suppose we could live off the land here if we had to do it.

I have a vacate lot next to the carriage house across the back street. It used to be a pasture when horses were kept in the carriage house. I let a civic group use it and they set up little plots to teach children how to raise a garden. They didn't offer me any produce, though.

That sucks, Em. You should have required that as rent.

I get paid watching the kids. They are thrilled every time that they see growth and they get all excited when the plants start to bear. These aren't farm kids. They realize that what they are seeing is a miracle.
