A few years later, the dining car turned into a cafeteria-style car and the food turned into cafeteria food. I won't even go into "first class" service, but I can tell you a couple of things. There were no mints on the pillows, and the last time I went by train, a rat ran over my feet...

Last time I took Amtrak from NYC to Philly on business some dude puked all over the place, he was drunk and beligerant, yelling at people. Needless to say the cops were waiting for him at the next stop, he resisted and got Tasered. Interesting to see a human flopping around on the train platform like a fish out of water

YUCKY! Can't blame Amtrak for having a moron on the train, but he might have been puking because he got food poisoning in the cafeteria car  . What a world we live in. You're young, 16, so you haven't seen nearly the time line that I have, and if I were doing a time line of this Country over the years of my life, it would be on a down-slant  .

I was a teenager in '64. A few years later I'd be in Nam. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago.

I would describe someone born in '64 as young, 16. It all depends where on the spectrum you are judging from, lol.

I do, however, agree with you 100% about age being a state of mind. I know people my age that simply feed into misfortune and illness. It's almost creepy. My parents were always "young." My dad is 93 and his sister 95--neither have ever accepted illness as a way of life. They also worked their entire lives. My aunt stopped a year or so ago because her boss died. His partner wanted her to stay on and work for him, but she said she wanted to spend more time enjoying her great grandchildren and family! My dad didn't plan to stop work, but he was diagnosed with Alzheimers last year, and also decided to spend more time with family and friends. He's doing really well so far (knock on wood)--just a little set-back a couple of weeks ago because he had an infection that they didn't immediately identify. It was pretty scary when it was happening, but he's back to his old ornery self again (which s a good thing).

My mom always used to tell me that she felt like she did when she was young--even when she got the cancer that killed her. She enjoyed life with the best of them, but died when she was only a few years older than I am now. So, although I love life to the max and think as young as I ever had, I have a little shadow hanging over me. Sometimes I give over to the fear, but for the most part, I think I'm Superwoman--no fright at all! ;)

Just today a friend told me that age is just a number. I replied, "Yes, but my number is so large!" My primary care physician tells me that my family history is enviable. The Kings live long and well. As long as I'm enjoying myself I'm not going worry.

I'm in (the middle of--unfortunately)--the reunion crap for my high school right now. The saddest things are that some people still have that "high school mentality,"--the pettiness, power hungry ridiculousness; but even more, there are so many people who have passed away (Vietnam and time), worse yet, those who are ill or feed into being ill.

You know the ones I mean: the first thing they want to talk about is every ache, pain and illness that has befallen them since the last time you spoke--or since the beginning of time. If you've had it, they've had it twice and more painfully. I try really hard to just shut up about my problems--health or otherwise, but sometimes I want to shout, "Shut the f**k up! There are people that have it so much worse than you..." Then there are others, who really do have serious illnesses, who try so hard to keep up and be part of everything, without ever letting on about their problems.

I'm seeing all of it throughout the preparation for the reunion. A lot of it has me shaking my head in disbelief; but then there's all those wonderful people I had forgotten, and I am absolutely out-of-my-mind thrilled to be able to reconnect with them. It seems they are exactly those people that I would choose for friends if I were just looking now...

Hey, losing a preseason game is meaningless. Ask the Lions fans. The year that they lost every game they won all of their preseason games. The games are just to see if your off-season acquisitions are going to help the team. It isn't like the Saints had a lot of holes to fill.

Limiting preseason to 2 games is definitely a blessing as far as injuries go! I can't stand to see a player go down preseason... It's just such a useless loss!

I'm not sure that longer seasons are a good idea, since tired players are more liable to be injured. There were a lot less injuries when the seasons were shorter, back when I was a young guy. I'm not saying that it is entirely due to the length of the season, but it is a factor. The economic are driving longer seasons though, so they will get longer. I suspect that careers will become shorter, however. Emmit Smith's record may be safe, simply because nobody's body will hold up that many years.

I don't think they're planning on making the seasons longer, just changing it around so that instead of 4 preseason games, there will just be 2, and then the rest will be regular season games.

That's still two more games where the starters will play most of the games. We have already reached the point where it isn't so much how good a team is as how well they avoid injuries. The older players are more vulnerable, so when I team loses them they lose a lot of experience and leadership. I know that the fans want to see their best players all of the time, but children want to eat too many sweets, too. My fear is that the caliber of play will decline.

I'd be happy seeing only scrubs in preseason games--although, it wouldn't accomplish much, lol. I cannot stand to see players, young or old, lost to the preseason.

I agree, ck. Of course, I hate seeing players lost at all. I think that seasons should be decided by who has the best team, not what team best survives the injuries. It isn't just the skill positions, either. Offensive lines have to work together as a unit. When there are too many substitutions they just fall apart, no matter how talented the individual players may be. I've seen so many potentially great teams flounder because of injuries in the offensive lines.

G' Morning Swiss
ck, hope you get to the game tonight. Good luck to your Dolphins - hope to see a bit of Marshall. Not sure what will be televised in TN tonight.
Em, enjoy your game v the Cards....
dred, missed your game v the Raiders so not sure what happened there
Might be a long season for Bills fans from what I saw last night.

And, hope to see some talent emerge esp on ST / kick returns for the COLTS!
16F, should be a good matchup w/ your 9ers. "Sugar Dumpling"???? HA HA HA, been called a lot of things but that may be a first - lol! Doubt we'll see another TD pass from Addai to Wayne - one of the highlights (imo) from last season ;)

Am off to TN - enjoy the w/e~

I'm just hoping that the Texans get through the preseason without major injuries. We are especially vulnerable, because the drop-off after our starting quarterback is like stepping off a cliff. Best of luck to everybody. Dred, the Cowboys defense looked most impressive. The Raiders didn't score until the fourth quarter, when the Cowboys had the water boys playing. I don't know if I've ever seen a defense with more physical talent.
