I think it would depend on the holiday, Em. Often people get very depressed at holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, you know--the "family" holidays. I know I am one of them. Even though I have great kids who do their best to be with me on important holidays, I have no control over the depression that descends upon me. I think it may be for those who have gone--like my mom, who was also my best friend. She was the queen of holidays, and always cooked and entertained with a flourish. I can do that, but I can't do it with the gusto with which she did. I love the fact that I have friends and family surrounding me, but I cry all night long. I suppose I'm a bit greedy there, huh? There are those who are lonely and have lost their families and perhaps their friends--the lounges are full of them come holiday time.

Not so for holidays like Fourth of July. Nothing to be depressed about (unless you can't stand loud noise and lots of it and you leave on a beach where fireworks start when the sky begins to darken and go on all damned night, lol).

When my daughter-in-law remarried, her very nice husband adopted my grandchildren. I'm the last of the King family. Sometimes I feel that I'm a member of the Compson family in The Sound and the Fury. Certainly there are times when I feel that the Snopes are taking over.

You are only the last of the King (or whatever your real name is, sir :? ) family in name, Emeritus. In reality, your line will continue. I can't remember, but I think you said Tom had two boys and a girl. Surely they will continue for many generations to come. My mom's sister, not so. She and her husband had one daughter. They passed on and their daughter--my cousin, my very dearest, closest cousin--was killed in a freak car accident many years past. She had no children of her own. Her father and his sister had no other children. Now THAT is the end of the line...

That is tragic, ck. I don't want to get into self-pity, but family name has meant a lot to the Kings. When my grandfather married a woman who was an only child, they gave all of their sons her maiden name as a middle name, to keep it alive. I was taught as a child that I must never do anything to sully the family name. It looks like nobody else will have that responsibility.

Yes, it was tragic. My mom was one of four daughters, clearly the end of the "Gorman" line. They all promised to give their first-born "Gorman" for the middle name. That stopped with the baby of the daughters, which would be my mom. She chose not to give me the name Gorman, and rather, gave me the middle name "Marsha." I'm not clear on why she did that...

Purity and innocence are highly overrated. Being good because you don't know any better is a lot less commendable than being pretty good by a ceaseless struggle against baser instincts. It takes little courage to fight if you are invulnerable like Superman. If you refuse to give in when you're a frightened wimp, you are brave. It is the same with moral courage.

yeah pretty much.....baseball takes up a little of my sports thoughts during the off season....but when football season finally gets here, I dust off the remote and oil up the recliner. This year its looking more and more like I might miss a couple of the Colts games.....thats when the fit will hit the shan 8-)

I haven't heard that one in many years. It was at the same time as the Bear-foot boy with teaks of Chan.
