A NOTE TO ALL, FROM C.K.

Postby cklaurence » Sat Nov 06, 2010 12:39 pm

TO MY DEAR SWISS FAMILY:

I want you to know that I consider everyone who posts here dear, and I hope I offend no one (and if I should, it is truly accidental) by what I say this morning. I'm pretty sure that all the 'regulars' know how very much Switzerland means to me--why I built it, why I revised it when I opened the new website and how important it is to me that Switzerland succeeds. (If you don't, smail me--I will gladly give you details and/or answer any questions you might have about it.)

I suppose everyone is familiar with the old adage, "You can please some of your family all of the time, all of your family some of the time, but you can't please ALL of your family ALL of the time." (I'm pretty sure I got that right ;) .) Well, I think that possibly Switzerland (and I) are at an impasse here and now, because I keep trying to please ALL of my Swiss family, ALL of the time, and somewhere, somehow, there's a breakdown. With this post, I hope to avoid misunderstandings in the future. When anyone, and I mean ANY ONE in Switzerland 'leaves the room,' (in anger or hurt) it breaks my heart. Those of you with whom I've developed close personal friendships know more about my personal life (although, I've never been shy about speaking out here about it), and just how deeply I care about about this little place that was created as an escape from those 'other' blog sites.

This post, of course, arises from the melodrama that grew from TryThinking's "Get Out and Vote" topic room, which grew into a whiplash of resentment, anger and name-calling. (It's locked now, so those of you who missed it, don't go running over there to see it  .) So rather than going on and on (as I tend to do  ) let me get right to the point.

The New Switzerland was built on the requests and suggestions I had received in The Olde Switzerland. My intent, as I mentioned, was for bloggers to have a place to go to talk football (and some other stuff, if that is/was their desire) without fear of intimidation regarding your team or to you personally. In The Olde Switzerland, we were, of course, limited to one board--so if the topic was distasteful, you either had to try to change it, stay and be upset, or just walk away during the time that topic was on the board. It sometimes caused problems, but my publisher had more say than I did in that site, so, it was either for me to accept or set my own site up, which I finally did.

So here we are at the true beauty of The New Switzerland. I thought it was (nearly) perfect. The Swiss Family members have the opportunity to post on whatever topics are on the boards OR open another topic to discuss whatever else you (I, we) cared to visit. So what in the world happened when TryThinking, one of our first family members and as far as I know, pretty much a good friend to all, posted "Get Out and Vote?" I was shocked, hurt and I cannot tell you how distressed. The post, as best I could tell, was non-denominational, innocuous and to the point. TT, who I have spoken with numerous times since this mess started, said it was done in the spirit of public service--had no intention of getting into a political discussion...but my thought is, "So, what if he did want to get political?"

In The Olde Switzerland, politics were verboten because of the one board limitation. There was no where to go if that subject was on the board (and I was the most disobedient blogger--as I believe many of you are already thinking  ) when it came to that subject. Most everyone in the Swiss family knows that I am extremely outspoken, especially when it came/comes to politics. So when I saw all the disruption here yesterday over 'Get Out and Vote,' my gut reaction was, "Why is everyone here, yelling about politics in Switzerland?" when all anyone had to do was click back to the 'new posts' or scroll through the many others already up OR even start a new topic. So really, here in The New Switzerland (and you can vote me down here--this is just my thought and I'm throwing it out to you) why can't we talk about politics??? Yes, it is a Football Blog and first and foremost, Switzerland will always be a football blog--but why can't other subjects be introduced in separate rooms that no one ever has to visit should they appear distasteful? As I said, this is the opinion of just one of the Swiss Family and you can easily veto it.

For this past couple of days, I have been obsessed with "how can I fix my dear Switzerland?" Some pretty ugly words (and gestures) have been thrown around, egos have been stepped (stomped) on and the tension throughout Switzerland is palpable. I can't for the life of me figure out where all the hostility comes from, when prior to Tuesday, (I thought) everyone got along well. Of course, wherever people are there will be an occasional little spat and/or misunderstanding. We have them and they go away. Ladies and Gentlemen (and all you others :?: ) in the Swiss family, is it possible for us to
put this behind us and move forward? If you feel you want to say something privately (whether it is to make an apology, demand an apology, tell someone there is no need for an apology, etc.)--please, please, please do it...

I thought about using good old Jewish guilt here, but then it occurred to me that I'm the only Jew in Switzerland--so how well doe it work on the rest of the world? So, I decided to definitely not bother with bringing up my arachnoiditis (Google it, please), and how stress can aggravate my condition, blah, blah, blah. Lucky for you!

Okay. I hope something I've said has resonated in all of you, especially those of you that were 'at the scene' of the breach in our Swiss Family's peaceful existence. I also used this forum to suggest that the New Switzerland allows for us to discuss subjects that were previously untouchable, and would appreciate some feedback in that regard. I really love this place and all of you who post here... <3

I'm not interested in arguments that persuade nobody and only lead to ill feelings. Some folks seem to need that, however. They can have at it as long as it doesn't involve me. Have you noticed how many people have disappeared since the topic was introduced?

A NOTE TO ALL, FROM C.K.

Postby LadyHawk » Sat Nov 06, 2010 5:01 pm

CK, I agree with what you said and have definitely learned to NOT post in a room not related to football. I don't want to be responsible for any trouble here...so my apologies to any and all who may feel I have some responsibility in what happened this week.

That said, I loved our long conversation today... We need to do that more often. What topic DIDN'T we cover? World peace, music, men, politics, religion, children, football, education ... LOL It was grrreat!

I too enjoyed our convo, Lady! When you look at the list of what we covered--religion, men, politics alone--according to the 'rules,' we might have been fighting the entire time, . We ought to make a rule that we speak at the very least, once a week. That keeps us in touch with things so much better than the blogs or email. Problem is, once the weeks start (Monday :( ) we get so bogged down with life, we never have time for talking. I, of course, have an advantage over you because my 'babies' are grown-ups now. That means at least I don't have to do homework with them any more... :D . Nevertheless, we can at least attempt to keep our phone 'dates' closer...

As for you, Em--ALL of the subjects came of well with respect to our conversation together, yet WE'LL never tell which of the subjects were thumbs up or thumbs down, tee hee...

Well, dred--dear, dear dred, if you can read my post (below) without falling asleep (because it is a tad on the wordy side)--you will see I have proposed that in The (amazing) New Switzerland, we technically CAN have political discussions--or any other kind of 'stuff,'--because we have the luxury of cordoning off into separate rooms (unlike The Olde Switzerland). They can be labeled clearly as to what the subject matter is (perhaps even we can come up with a label of sorts advising that the content is unrelated to football)--and if anyone visits, they should be prepared... Do I deduce from your post that you would be in favor of such an amendment to our old rules? ;)

i kinda like breaking rules ck...but if you want i can find some other rules to break...somewhere...so in a word (a few)...i think folks should be able to start a thread on whatever is bothering them or exciting them...or whatever they feel like...

I don't think you need to fix anything. You are just fine. We never talk or chat but I sense you are a very nice person, are passionate, and you care. But.......you cannot control the way people think, therefore you should not let a pissing match hurt you. Nor is it your fault if the stars are occasionally in the wrong alignment and people clash. Nor should you feel guilty because this is your page. There will be future clashes here, regardless of how honorable your intentions are. Occasional clashes a natural part of having a meeting place with so many varied personalities. Time heals all wounds as well.

We are all adults, but sometimes we don't act that way. Sometimes our egos get in the way. It's harder to love than it is to hate, and sometimes it shows.

I did post that I voted on that page but I guess I missed the fighting. Or if I did see it, I blew it off as ranting. I really don't even remember.

You seem very sweet, and I appreciate it. Keep up the good work.

To those of you who have responded to this topic page--whether in writing here, via smail, email or telephone, I thank you for your very kind support.

SuperSerial: I'm sorry we don't post together more often, but I'm sure that we will eventually find ourselves on the same page at the same time. I look forward to getting to know you better. I am not nearly as nice as your picture paints ( ); however, I do have a big heart and I'm loyal to a fault (or so I'm told). In previous years at another well-known blog (not naming names--Faux ;) ), I behaved a lot differently than I do over here. I am super-conscious of the fact that Switzerland (named by TryThinking, BTW) is a blog I created to allow everyone a get-away from the nastiness there--so I try to be more neutral and less controversial.

I do (as I stated in my Note) like the idea of having space for people to 'discuss' more controversial subjects (at their own risk), though. I don't believe you were at the Olde Switzerland, but it had only one page. Whatever was the subject on that page, was what you could discuss--or try to change. With all the improvements here in the New Switzerland, bloggers can walk their fingers into a room--or not. If problems are carefully contained in specific rooms, it can work; however, I am extremely concerned about the bomb that exploded as a result of the "Get out and Vote" post. I'm NOT going there again, but that was posted on Tuesday of last week, and here we are on football Sunday with the repercussions still being felt. Too many of my Swiss Family members have not even bothered to post their choices on the Weekly Picks page.

I have either spoken with, or tried to speak with everyone involved in the events on Tuesday and afterwards. First I tried to be rational, pointing out that this is such a non-issue to have allowed it to become such an issue. Egos have flared and silly stuff (Yes, everyone, I said SILLY :x ) has resulted. I then tried to plead on behalf of Switzerland--asking that egos be set aside for the 'greater good' of the blog. Finally, I have even sunk so low as to make my request more personal--alluding to the arachnoiditis (Google it, please) and my fragile physical (and mental) condition--which is strongly affected by any kind of stress. All to no avail.

Here it is, football Sunday. The Dolphins are playing (or doing their imitation of it) and I'm on the computer attending to this situation. So, at the risk of offending anyone any further, I am going to tell you exactly how I feel right now. I feel as though this has gone far enough. I don't care if you recognize that the posting of a Vote room was merely a public service announcement or whether you think that TryThinking had some horrible socialist agenda. Try, I think you are a bigger person than to allow this to continue. You are a cornerstone of Switzerland. You are highly respected and well-loved. Via text, I am asking you to view this post at Switzerland, regardless of your discussion with me stating you would not even *hoover--so I expect that you will care enough about me to be reading this now. Kicks, stop being a baby. We all waited for your return for a long, long time. Finally you and the kitty come home--you build a palatial residence and opened it up for all of us to enjoy, and now you want me to lock it up and close it down? I think NOT. I'm pretty sure everyone else who was near or involved in Tuesday's 'episode' has either apologized via email, smail, texting or posting on the boards. If I am wrong, no doubt someone will correct me, and I will apologize and make the correction as swiftly as I can.

FOR THE LOVE OF FOOTBALL, DAMMIT--PLEASE! LET'S STOP THIS AND GET BACK TO THE BUSINESS OF FIGHTING OVER OUR TEAMS AND NOT OVER SOMETHING THAT WASN'T EVEN POLITICAL!!! I'm just sayin'...

CK, yes I got your text and came and read your post.
I didn't go back to read all the posts that were here since Tuesday and just marked the forum read. (great option by the way)
The short and sweet of it is, something transpired and it is over and everyone apparently said what they had to say via whatever method they chose.
Now EVERYONE needs to move on posting about whatever it is they feel they wish to talk about and get back to what Switzerland was created for.

Not many here know the totality of each others personal lives and most like to keep it that way. For me, I have very full days that sometimes isn't conducive to allowing me much free time to blog. I do when I can and for the time being it does not allow me much.
If I or anyone else is not around blogging and contributing to Switzerland daily, it does not stop everyone else from doing so. CK set this up and is PAYING for it out of her pocket for everyone to have an option other than the alternative locations to post. I appreciate her doing that for as long as she has.

Good luck to everyone's teams except the Patriots, Jets and Bills. ;)

I now have a vacation to attend to, talk to you later.

Just sheckin' in to shee whash going on. Shounds like shom shiet went down.

NOMB thank God, lol. Didn't used to be that way though lol. I had a few melt downs at the old Swiss, just ask anybody. I used to have a couple issues...one was drinking and the other was drinking and betting NFL games $500 a pop. Sometimes, I would lose a bet favoring a team that was represented here. If I lost, I might come off with a remark as opposed to a comment, not cool.

Nothing said here is Gospel (thanks, TC) and nobody should take any comment (or remark lol) personally. I wasn't here, but it sounds a little like there were some posts that were easy to take personally. I do understand how politics can be taken personally with the recent volatility and uncertainty. It's not a subject I will discuss in any public forum any longer, though we used to quite a bit here without incident.

I can say from my experience that if you turn comments into remarks, you are at the next level by your own choosing, and you should expect what comes back around. I haven't been around to see much of the new Swiss, but that's the way it used to be. We always sorted things out pretty quickly without anger or someone having to leave. Hope it's still the same, Swivel Hips CK. :D

I doubt that it will bother him. Gerrard had to have help from a Houston defender (how's that for using a term loosely) to beat us.
